“WELL, THERE is something I’ve never told you guys. It’s not a story so much as a kind of confession.”

“Vic,” Winnie blurted in a stage whisper. “Go make some popcorn. This just keeps getting better!”

Chad smiled at this outburst and kept going. “Getting into modeling wasn’t my idea. My dad had been laid off, and my mom was working really hard to keep everything going. I was working a ton of hours as a lifeguard at the country club in town during the summer, trying to contribute what I could to keeping the lights on at home. One day I rotate off the pool for my fifteen-minute break, and there’s this guy waiting at the lifeguard station to talk to me. He’s like, do you model? And I’m all, hell no. And he’s like, you should think about it, and he gives me his business card. He’s a photographer, and he says he’s got all kinds of connections that could get me super noticed by people in the industry. I tell him I’m not really interested because I never really thought I had the… look, or whatever, for modeling, but I take the card to be polite and I stick it in my locker and don’t think about it again for a while.

“Then the next month my mom loses her job, and we’re completely fucked. Me and my mom and dad and my four brothers and sisters and no money coming in except what I make as a lifeguard and a couple of my sisters mowing lawns around the neighborhood. And no sign of anything more coming, either. I saved this fat stockbroker guy from drowning one day, and he tipped me like fifty bucks. As if I’d brought him a special martini or something. I would have been insulted except that fifty kept us from getting kicked out for missing the rent again. But since rich dudes weren’t exactly drowning right and left, the whole ‘getting tipped for CPR’ thing isn’t going to make me much coin. So I dig down in my locker, and under my spare tube of zinc, I find the guy’s card. I text him, and he texts back like five seconds later. We arrange to meet up after my shift ends, at his place. And before you ask, Thor, yes I did tell a friend where I was going and when I would check in. You don’t have to lecture me on stranger danger.

“The guy lived in a tract house on the edge of town, and he’d converted his basement into a studio. It was a pretty cool setup, and he took some really great shots he said would get some attention at agencies, which sounded great to me. I thanked him for helping me out, and then he’s like, now would you like to help me out?”

“Uh-oh,” Thor murmured, unable to keep silent any longer.

“Yeah, okay, I wasn’t making the best choices right then, since he had gotten me all excited about possibly making the modeling thing work.
